If you had to choose one line of electric guitars to used what would it be? I would choose Fender, cuz Fenders rock. I love the way they feel. They hold close to you, unlike Les Paul's that are sorda heavy and tend to fall away from you when you are playing. Don't get me wrong Les Paul's are cool, just not for me. I do like Gibson's SG though, there so light, and have a good feel. I see why Angus loves them so much. But I still stick with Fenders (Strat in perticular.)

Although I do like the tone of a Les Paul I do have to agree w/ you about being uncomfortable. On the other hand, some people like that feel. Personally I love my S Series Ibanez 7 string. The body conforms to my shape... almost like we were made for each other :). Also, it's really thin which makes it incredibly light weight. On top of that, the neck is so smooth. Which partly has to do with my guitar tech. It just plays awesome... plain and simple.

yeah, i noticed your name Bad Horsie. You get that from Vai. He uses a seven string sometimes doesn't he. I don't care too much for seven strings though. I guese it's because I'm used to six strings. If I want that low growl of a seven string, I tune my strat down. But now that I think of it, I can't remember what I tuned it to. that's funny. I'll have to look, I wrote it down somewhere. Oh well. I like Ibanezs. I played a Satriani. It was awesome. Well, catch ya later.

Hmm, I love strats too, and this seems to be more electric oriented, but here is a story. I went into a music store and I had some time to kill so I looked at the acoustics. I have a big steel strung acoustic, and I saw this tiny one, about the size of a classical guitar, thin, and elctric acoustic. It was a yamaha, and though it wasn't the most expensive guitar in the store (it was still pretty dear though), I didn't want to put it down. It just felt so nice, with a nice, slightly less agressive tone than your average steel strung, and I wanted it very much. I'm not sure if it was a favorite guitar, but there are certainly those instruments out there that just fit you to a t.

Actually Fender, when I first started playing I liked Fenders more than anything. Then I had a thing for Jacksons' for a while. Finally after playing about every guitar in Guitar Center I came to the conclusion that I love the way Ibanez guitars play. And although I do love the Universe model guitars mine is nothing like it. Except for the fact that it's a seven string. I picked the seven string just to be versatile and because I could basically. But yes I do like Steve Vai.

I like Fenders and LP's all the same.
Two different tones, two different gits!
I also dig the over $400buck Ibanez's too. Hell, is there really such a thing as a "really bad" guitar nowadays?

Hey all:
Les Pauls rock and Fenders rock too. My FAV axe of choice is a G&L RAMPAGE. This is one of the early "shred" type models they put out. It is not made anymore. They made them for only a few years in the late 80's. This guitar is killer. In a nutshell it is a strat body, ebony fingerboard, 1-humbucker, 1-volume knob, locking Kahler trem and that is it! I made some mods to mine. Took the stock Schaller pickup out replaced it with a Duncan JB. Put a set of Schaller tuning machines in and replaced the locking nut with a Floyd locking nut. This guitar is the same as Jerry Cantrell plays from the band Alice in Chains. If you can get your hands on one definately get it. GO for the vintage yellow looking one, that's the butter!!!!!!!!! Its a one trick pony but rips. PEACE!

I love each. I have a SRV Strat(the 1st year of issue) and a
LP Classic Plus with killer tone & flametop to match!! For me, the song chooses the guitar, Govt Mule/Allmans etc.=LP. SRV/Clapton etc=Strat. Having a choice between the 2 greatest solidbodies of all times is a dream come true.

Right on Blues! My opinion exactly!
Bardsley
03-29-2001, 11:41 PM
That's exactly why there is such a problem with picking "the best" guitar. If there was a best guitar, there would only be one that pros would use. As it is, every guitarist dreams of having them all, the Strat, the les paul, the PRS, then the ES175 etc, maybe a superstrat for shred, a tele, the list goes on, there is no point in saying one is better than the other, the music dictates, because the music is more important than the label. Then there are amps..... Oh no, it's too much, I want it all!

There's some nights where the my Strat just ain't cutting it and then my Tele sounds just right!
Then my Epi 335 Dot Deluxe just knocks those Blue Notes for a loop.

Your right on I have a Jackson kv3 with floyd rose and it kicks butt. I put a George Lynch Screamin Demon as the power plant and it is the most versatile guitar I have ever played I love it. Especially the wide neck and super close action plus it reminds me of Slayer.

I FULLY agree :D...And when you find "that" tone, get down on your knees and thank the lord because there are SOOOOO many confused players out there who unfortunatly are being mislead by bad info and clever marketing.....If ya got the $$$$, THE base configuration (to use as a reference to judge others by, in my opinion) is a Strat or Les Paul played through a Marshall 50 watt head and 4 x 12 half-stack with celestion speakers......You CANNOT go wrong with this set-up....There are others who will compare their guitars/amps/speakers and claim they are just as good, BUT how many can claim that their set-up sounds BETTER? The list just got VERY short :D

Fenders have great sound and feel but they all look, sound, feel, and play the exact same way and all of the afore mentioned are vastly inferior to ibanez. My favorite series by ibanez is the AX series, followed closely by the s-series. And as long as I'm insulting almost everybody's favorite type of guitar, I might as well add that les paul guitars are inferior as well.

....I might as well add that les paul guitars are inferior as well.
*You might, but you would ABSOLUTELY be talkin' through your sphynctor.....We're talkin' SERIOUS tone here, buckwheat....Not the flavor of the month that you see Vai holding in Guitar Wannabe's R Us.......I HAVE PERSONALLY seen Vai play a Les Paul (Whitesnake tour)....WOW !!! Vai endorses Ibanez, but often plays Les Pauls... what's not to get? I also think that Lee was pointing out that Ibanez' are in fassion right now, which seems to inflate people's perception of "quality" in an instrument.
Seriously, you've been basicly speaking out of your bung hole here, while I'm extreamly unimpressed with most new Fenders, the fact is Fender does offer a wide variety of feels, looks, and tones. And I have yet to hear an Ibanez with the pure balls of a good Les Paul.

Let me assure you that I have no great objection to anyone using an Ibanez- You really have to play what it is that fits you. I'll also point out that I am not a Les Paul person... I would own one, but my monetary funds are limited, so I try to focus on the instruments that better suit me, rather than the ones I would play on occaision. So that said, it's true that I have yet to hear an Ibanez with the balls of a Les Paul (and I know that you all know what I'm talking about). Their are a few resons for this- the big one I think comes down to the mass of the body. Ibanez likes to make light guitars, Gibson focuses on producing highly figured rocks.
My main point is that if we decide to start crapping on brand names, their's plenty we can slop on basicly any company out there; I certainly don't want to get into that kind of discussion.

What I meant by refering to les pauls as pathetic was that they feel to much like acoustics when you play them in the way that they are too heavy, bulky, and always get in the way. However, I will readily admit that they do have more "balls" as you put it than ibanez guitars and just might be better quality. Only thing is, I don't think guitars should be heavy enough to kill a man with. They are'nt that kind of axe.:)
Raskolnikov
04-22-2001, 07:10 PM
Les Pauls do feel weird (to me). But people get used to them. As for me, I'm willing to sacrifice lightness for tone.
I don't think you could have put "I don't like the way Les Pauls feel" any clumsier...
It's ok though, we're a forgiving bunch.

*The Les Paul MAY BE the BEST lap guitar EVER.......Yup, itz a "Heavy" bastard BUT compared to what ??? The lightwieght, no tone schit that floods the market ??? MANY people have seen "lil' 'ol" Randy Rhodes (about 5'5" or so) raise holy hell with a Les Paul and the V has also....Sounds to me like you need to start eatin' them Wheaties and bulk up a bit.... :D....Just so ya don't think I'm some kinda Les Paul and Strat freak (which I am !! LOL), I want you to know that after seeing (and hearing) Neal Schon play that marvelous PRS through those Marshall heads/Half-stax (4 of them, each) is THE definition of warmth, sustain and tone......

if heavy guitars are a problem you may want to check out this web page- this guy I know makes a "double" guitar strap that some people seem to like. I myself don't use one because I need mobility (to be able to quickly switch basses/ flip them around on the strap buttons and such), but regardless, it's worth checking out: The Dare Strap (http://www.idare2.com)

Yeah, the important thing is to get a guitar that you like and you can play. In this respect, the brand name that's stuck on the front and what the guitar looks like don't really matter that much. They're probably all made in the same sweat shop in Singapore anyway . . .
I tried a Gibson out a long time ago, and I found it way too big and too heavy. The action felt almost like an acoustic.
For me, Ibanez is just right. And this has nothing to do with the fact that Vai endorses them or whatever. I just like the way they play.
Take it easy.

I understand where you're coming from, but I've never heard of any of the people you just mentioned, and if you can't get all the tone you need from the ibanez AX series that was just refered to as "no tone schit", than it's probably because you've never played one. And you're probably right about the wheaties. I only weigh about 115 lbs so carrying any guitar for any length of time gets to be a drag. I guess thats just one of the drawbacks to being both a guitarist and a wrestler. Sigh.
