View Full Version : That damn Yngwie and his volume knob trick

Ok, I observed a video of Yngwie unleashing his glory and saw how he was turning the volume knob along with the song. Having thought that was the coolest idea since sliced bread, I decided to give it a try (of course I knew he made it look easier). My question is, is there any way I can make it easier? It seems as though when I do that the knob veers either to the too loud side or to the too quiet side and never stays where I want it. Anyone else know how to pull it off?

Such a simple and obvious answer, yet behold how many times it's overlooked. I guess I should've seen that coming.

Yngwie asn't the first to think of this trick. But he does tend to use it a lot (e.g. Blackstar). I'm not sure what you're going for here...Do you want to fade in to the note from silence? Or use it as a constant volume swell?

Over many questions, this has been the obvious Awsner, now the Question is, how do i practice really good like these guys? :)

Well, currently I'm hardly able to do it at all as my fingers that I wrap around the knob tend to move inconsistantly and I lose my place, let alone that kind of independance in my fingers is still new to me. So...I guess I'm shooting for anything more than I can do right now, but the consistant swelling sound does appeal to me in particular.

you should have the volume on your amp up real loud so you only have to turn the volume up slightly, maybe set up a channel on your amp for this so you can switch between to volume settings.practice it real slow to get use to doing it. also use a delay pedal for cool effects. i think malmsteen does

for practice you can try and play along with eddie van halen's "cathedral" on diver down. also you can use a volume pedal.

i have a tele, but i really dig the sound of the volume swells

the problem is that the vol. nob is way to far away from the bridg to be able to pick and use the vol nob, so i just have to use hammer on/pull offs and use my picking hand to do the volume control

that way might be easier to get the timing down correctly

i suppose your probably better with a pedal cos the little turny knob's pretty usless and hard to work...well it is on my guitars. Why don't you try loosening the knob slightly to get better control over it. by the way i dunno how you'd go about doing that so better ask someone first

Having finally gotten a chance to read this I extend my gratitude for the info. Yes Yngwie does use a stereo delay effect when he does such things.
