Hello all, I have a Epiphone Firebird, which is a set-neck solidbody electric, and i am pondering refinishing it. i really dislike the red paint that is on it, it seems generic and i just don't care for the red. I am thinking of maybe just stripping off the paint and staining the wood, like the original Firebirds. Have any of you had an experience with this? Any tips, sites, products, or books, any of you may recommend would be most appreciated.
regards,
jp

So you got that Firebird, how do you like it? Besides the red paint that is, ? Another good supplier is reranch.com , they kind of specialize in the vintage finishes for the diyer, I take it you are looking to do a tobbaco sunburst, well I just want to make sure you are making a informed decision, be forewarned that sometimes when you strip a solid color paint off, the wood underneath can be less than you expect, sometimes thats why a particular guitar gets paint instead of clear or translucent finish, also it's a very tedious and time consuming job, for an excellent result you will have to 1. Follow all the steps, 2. Allow for proper drying times 3. Allow for screw ups and redo's 4. Be meticulous, You are looking at approx a 90 day job, and thats not including alot of screw ups, I'm not trying to discourage you just forewarn, a good finish is hard to do and if you are not into small details and large paitence, you will not be enjoying it............
