new amp

I would like to know what you guys wouls recommend for an amp to jam with friends and maybe later gig with.
Peavey Transformer 112 or 212
Crate GFX 212
I like the Transformer because I could play hard rock and then turn a knob a get blues tone. that is good cause I don't want to buy two amps. any suggetions for under $800.

Any decent tube amp will do both (other folks will suggest their pet amps to you I'm sure). Just remember that you should think more about how you yourself want to sound than a "rock" tone or a "blues" tone.

The Crate would be a good choice, but if you're willing to pay more, you could get a Marshall AVT100 1x12 for $699 or an AVT150 for $799 (musiciansfriend.com). They both have a superb tone, plenty of effects, multuple channels, included footswitch, and plenty of tone shaping contrlos.
In fact, I think the AVT seris tone is so good that I'm considering buying an AVT150 half stack to use for a stereo rig/backup rig for my Blue Voodoo half stack.

Go to a store that sells used gear, and get a nice old fender or marshall tube amp for under $500. The Peavey you named isn't a good sounding amp, and Never Ever Ever buy anything made by Crate, poor construction, poor sound, they don't even put metal jacks on their amps, you will wholeheartedly regret ever buying anything made by Crate, I assure you.

From my experience, the absolute best sound i've ever heard is a blackface '64-'67 Fender Bassman. These heads sell for about $350. A cab can be gotten for about $150. I personally can't stand to play on a solid state or modeling amp for more than a few minutes without putting my guitar down in disgust. hell, great sounds can be gotten from a Peavey Butcher head $100-$200 and a cab. These older amps are reliable and sound so much better than newer ones that you will not believe it.

The Marshall DSL 401 is a good versatile amp. I own one and am very happy with it. It has three foot-switchable channels. I set mine up for a good rock sound on the first overdrive channel and use the high gain channel for metal or rock leads. I use the clean channel for blues.
