When using my chromatic tuner it comes up with a number to, ie E2, A2
can someone tell me the correct number for each of the strings? thanks! sorry if this is a stupid question.

Standard tuning is E A D G B E thats starting at the fattest (low E) string and going down to high E.

Also, you might find it easier if you pick a specific note on your tuner and tune to it instead of setting your tuner to recognize the note played.

Sorry i don't think i made it clear enough. I know how to tune the guitar but i wanted to know what the numbers mean after the note.. the number gets higher the higher you tune it.

Ahhhh...my bad. :o
As far as I know those numbers are 1 Hz steps above standard pitches. So if you have E2 on a electronic tuner you are 2 Hz above a true E note. Hopefully that's what you were looking for.

The numbers indicate which key of a piano would play that note. For instance, E2 would be the 2nd E from the left side of the keyboard.

I think the number is the number of the string. You have it set to manual mode. So basically its not automatic so it assumes that the number your doing is the correspondnig string and it seeks that out. I.e. 1 is the high e and 6 is the low e. It will screw up everything if you not corresponding strings. Its on automatic. Basically your tone is corresponding to other string notes as you continue to tune to different pitches. say you start at 6e and start to tighten the string eventually if u dont break it will go to a higher pitch corresponding to other strings...lighter strings ie 5 then 4 then 3 then break!

In A4 = 440 Hz pitch:

E2 is 88.407 Hz; the low E string of a guitar.

A2 is 110.00 Hz; the A string.

D3 is 146.83 Hz; the D string.

G3 is 196.00 Hz; the G string.

B3 is 246.94 Hz; the B string.

E4 is 329.63 Hz; the high E string.
