I only recently discovered this place... I'm still a beginner at the guitar and am interested in learning how to play most likely punk rock. I've only been playing for about a year... I'm trying to play well enough to play at a battle of the bands at our school in November 2005. I can't afford a good teacher so I look wherever I can to learn things. I'm currently trying to form a band with my friends but we're pretty much clueless right now. I hope to learn a lot from this site. :)

Welcome to the board noisehazard. There is a ton of stuff you can learn just from the lessons on the main site. And coming from another beginner, it's a piece of cake getting advice from the other people around here, just ask.

if you do anything to contribute good to this site.. i ask of you to stay away from "punk rock" it will only limit your gutiar abilities and will take much longer to improve...IMHO

well, i don't think there's any harm in starting where your favorite type of music lies, but focusing on only one style is detrimental to your ability to learn no matter what.

I'd actually recommend learning blues, atleast a little bit of it. I did and it helped my playing ability alot- I can play times better than I could 3 years ago.

Considering you've got just over a year it might be a good idea to check out some of the freebie lessons done by the instructors here.
Just learn a few 'guitar tricks' every day and by next november you'll know over 1000 new riffs you can show off with.

Pony, I'm forever in your debt to that same advice you gave to me many moons ago.
