Help with chords please!

Hey all, i got my electric guitar about 3 weeks ago. It's a Fender Squier. The only thing that i can't find is how to play chords. I wouldn't know one if it hit me on the head!!

I was just wondering if anyone knows any good web sites to teach me chords. Or maybe if someone could email for a few poniters. Anything will be appreciated.

http://www.chordfind.com is a site with nothing but chords and at the top of the screen there's a guitar neck so you can see how the chords are positioned.

As a guitarist, having a good working knowledge of chords and a strong rhytmic feel will always be two of your most valuable assets. The problem is that with alot of beginners they tend to rely on only one particlar style, (because its comfortable). Always dabble in different techniques ( no matter how good your friends tell you you are), because it all depends on what you like, and as the years progress you'll realize how important it is to make music for yourself.

Mart Man it may be a good idea to get a chord book like the Guitar Case Chord Book, it's cheap and when you need to find a chord you're not always going to be on the internet, you can also get large posters with chords on for easy reference while you've got a guitar in your hands. I would also suggest subscribing to a guitar magazine which provides tab and backing tracks on a CD. In the UK we have Total Guitar, Guitar Techniques and a few others, theyve really helped me develop and it's like playing with a band, I don't know if those magazines are available in the USA but you're bound to have something similar - good luck - no keep practising and make your own luck !

Books showing you chord voicings are good, to an extent. For a beginner, it's good to have chord books to give you the basic chords. As you get more advanced, however, relying on a book can be an inefficient way of of learning chords. If you get started on understanding the music theory behind chord construction and intervals, then you can figure out your own chord voicings, instead of having to look them up. This actually makes things much easier in the long run.

Ok, i know you can play a chord at different ways, but alot of these chords are taken down one string.
Is that correct, or am i wrong? :confused:

I was just wondering how I would go about finding some info on learning the backround to chord construction and theory. I am really wanting to understand how it all works together instead of just "playing" the chords. Any help out there would greatly help.

I recommend finding a good Guitar teacher at your, local music Store.
That is if you can afford it?
One most important thing in starting out on your own,
is you can develop bad habits like (incorect fingeing,
of the left hand or right hand Picking.
Also do you know the names of the guitar strings,
plus can you tune your guitar?
I do recommend the the guitar (DIC) of chords,
But don't try to learn them all at once.
If you decide on a guitar Teacher make sure he can cover,
all styles of music.
Also i recommend learning the chromatic scale ,i can/t,
stress this enough. Because once you learn the notes on the,
low or high E String you will no all the notes on the ,
Guitar.
Also learning a little music theory will help you alot.
Another Tip is When you look at alot of Tab stuff you,
find on the web they don/t tell you where to place your,
fingers or which ones to use,or how many times you strike,
each note.Most Advanced guitarests like myself can catch,
these screw ups by listening to the sound file if they have one.Try to meet the best guitarests in your area if you,
can then ask alot of questions about the guitar.

And by the way, you said about learning the notes on the fret board, well i have a sheet that tells me every note on the fret board and has steps to learning the whole lot. How do i do it if i just know the notes for the low or high E? and by the way, when they say low E, they do mean low as in pitch, not as in hight right? Just cheaking to see if i had made a terrible mistake, thanx everyone

Glad to help
Once you know the notes on the low E Big String ect,
you know the (Chromatic Scale)Plus the Notes on the Little,
String high E are the same as the Low E .........

Try to memorize the chromatic scale.
Now if we move to the fifth string which is the A String,
then depress the A String in the first fret this makes it,
a A# note plus a b-flat note .sound confusing?
if you have your chromatic scale memorized you would know ,
what note comes next as we move down the board to the,
second fret useing closed notes. It would be a B Note.
This same thing works on the D String plus the G String,
but now the B String closed at the first fret is a C note,
because theres no B# in music, the next string will be,
the High E When closed its a F note ect.

Olga.com has a chord library that takes like 20 pages to print. If you're looking for a chord and can't find it there it probably doesn't exist. :p
